Seoul museum shops bring together cultural-heritage design, contemporary art retail and craft-maker work in three different museum settings. The National Museum of Korea, MMCA Seoul and Seoul Museum of Craft Art each offer a different browsing experience, with their own retail spaces and opening arrangements.
This guide helps you choose a place to visit, find the correct shop and connect it with your sightseeing route. It is a comparison of shopping destinations, not a list of things you need to buy.
Choosing Between Seoul Museum Shops
Choose the National Museum of Korea for a museum-shopping visit connected with Korean cultural heritage. Choose MMCA Seoul for contemporary-art retail and a separate art bookshop. Choose Seoul Museum of Craft Art for a shop combining museum-branded work with pieces by craft artists.
Location is the next decision. The National Museum of Korea is in Yongsan. MMCA Seoul is on Samcheong-ro, while Seoul Museum of Craft Art is near Anguk. The latter two can be considered alongside a northern-central Seoul sightseeing day; Yongsan is a separate part of the city, not another stop on the same neighborhood walk.
You do not need to visit all three. Pick the setting that interests you and fits your existing itinerary. A museum shop can be the purpose of a visit, but its location inside a museum does not establish a separate entrance or an automatic exemption from the institution’s entry procedures.
1. National Museum of Korea: Heritage-Led Shopping
The National Museum of Korea (국립중앙박물관) has two numbered museum shops and a separately identified MU:DS Brand Showroom. The shopping spaces connect the museum’s cultural-heritage setting with contemporary design; the showroom should not be treated as a third interchangeable retail counter.
Address: 137 Seobinggo-ro, Yongsan-gu, Seoul / 서울 용산구 서빙고로 137. Save the museum name and street address together when navigating, then use the internal shop name to find the correct space.
Museum Shop 1: next to the Great Hall
Museum Shop 1 (상품관 1) is in the West Wing on the first floor, beside the Great Hall. This is a clearly identified retail destination for visitors who want to locate a shop rather than search the exhibition floors for a vaguely described souvenir area.
Its published hours are 09:30–17:30 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday, and 09:30–21:00 on Wednesday and Saturday. Listed closures are January 1, Seollal day, Chuseok day, and the first Mondays of March, June, September and December.
For a visit centered on this shop, check any date-specific notice before setting out. Its inquiry number is +82-2-2077-9769; identify it as Shop 1 when asking about opening arrangements.

Museum Shop 2 and the MU:DS Brand Showroom
Museum Shop 2 (상품관 2) is in the center of the permanent exhibition building’s first floor. Confirm its own hours if it is the reason for your visit, particularly before planning an evening stop. Do not automatically apply Shop 1’s late opening to it. Shop 2’s inquiry number is +82-2-2077-9771.
The MU:DS Brand Showroom is in the center of the permanent exhibition building’s third floor. Treat it as a promotional experience space rather than relying on it as another place to complete a purchase. The two numbered shops remain the retail destinations to distinguish when planning.
Entry and sightseeing connections
Permanent exhibition admission is free, while paid special exhibitions are charged separately. Visitors entering the permanent exhibition building, including those using its interior amenities, must pass security screening. A shopping visit is not a reason to assume those procedures can be bypassed.
Combine this destination with time you already intend to spend in Yongsan or at the museum. Keep shopping time separate from exhibition time, and do not arrive at the final minute expecting museum entry and retail browsing to follow identical deadlines.
2. MMCA Seoul: Art Shop and Art Bookshop
MMCA Seoul (국립현대미술관 서울) offers an Art Shop and an Art Book Shop beside the first-floor lobby. These are different retail offerings: the Art Shop relates to the museum’s identity, exhibitions and educational activities, while the bookshop focuses on museum publications, exhibition catalogues and art books.
Address: 30 Samcheong-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul / 서울 종로구 삼청로 30. Use the Seoul branch name; MMCA also operates other museum sites with their own shops and schedules.
The published retail hours are 10:00–18:00 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday, and 10:00–21:00 on Wednesday and Saturday. Listed closures are January 1, Seollal day and Chuseok day. Check temporary museum and retail notices for your travel date.

Choose the retail space that interests you
The Art Shop suits a visit focused on museum-linked art and design retail. The Art Book Shop offers a different browsing environment for readers interested in art publishing. Neither requires you to arrive with a specific purchase in mind.
For English-language reading, ask about the particular title and edition. An international book range does not mean every publication is available in English, and an English museum website does not guarantee English-speaking retail staff.
For retail inquiries, contact +82-2-3701-9870–2. If shopping is your only purpose, confirm the current entrance and access arrangements rather than assuming the lobby location establishes a ticket-free shopping policy.
Connect it with Samcheong-ro
Consider this stop when your route already includes Samcheong-ro or the area between Gyeongbokgung and Bukchon. If you have continued to Anguk or Insadong, decide whether returning to the museum is worth the additional journey instead of treating it as a compulsory stop.
MMCA publishes wheelchair-accessible entrance ramps and identifies a parking elevator in front of the first-floor Art Shop. Use the museum’s accessibility directions for your approach; this does not establish that every nearby subway exit provides a step-free route.
3. Seoul Museum of Craft Art: A Craft-Focused Shop
Seoul Museum of Craft Art (서울공예박물관), also called SeMoCA, has a shop selling museum-developed branded work and pieces by craft artists. It offers a single craft-focused retail stop rather than the collection of independent shops found in an Insadong shopping complex.
Address: 4 Yulgok-ro 3-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul / 서울 종로구 율곡로3길 4.
Shop location: Information Building (안내동), not Exhibition Building 1.
Shop inquiries: +82-2-6450-7239.

Shop hours and temporary evening opening
The ordinary shop schedule is Tuesday–Sunday, 10:00–18:00. A temporary schedule applies from September 15 through November 30, 2026: the shop closes at 19:00 on Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, at 18:00 on Thursday, and at 21:00 on Friday.
Do not use the exhibition buildings’ 21:00 evening closing as the shop’s closing time. After November 30, check the current retail schedule rather than relying on the temporary extension.
The museum normally closes on Mondays and January 1, with public-holiday exceptions. Confirm the shop’s own arrangements for a holiday Monday instead of assuming an exception automatically includes retail opening.
Anguk connection and access considerations
This is a shopping option when moving between Bukchon, Anguk and Insadong. Add it if your walking route passes the museum; otherwise, retain it as an alternative rather than shortening every other stop to include it.
Museum admission is published as free, with possible exceptions for rented exhibitions. For the temporary evening-opening program, no reservation is required. These admission arrangements should not be confused with a separately confirmed shop-only entrance policy.
Temporary route restriction: Exhibition Building 1’s first-floor lobby is closed October 13–25, 2026, with reopening announced for October 27. The shop is in another building, but do not use the closed lobby as a through-route. Ask the information desk about the current approach, especially if you need step-free access.
The shop photograph shows changes in floor level. Check the route to the specific retail space rather than assuming that a museum-wide accessibility description guarantees a level approach to every display.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which museum shop fits an Anguk or Bukchon itinerary?
Seoul Museum of Craft Art is the Anguk-area option, while MMCA Seoul fits a Samcheong-ro approach. Choose the stop that fits the actual direction of your walk. The National Museum of Korea is in Yongsan and requires a separate journey from these northern-central Seoul locations.
Do I need an exhibition ticket just to shop?
Do not assume a universal rule. The National Museum of Korea’s permanent exhibitions are free, and Seoul Museum of Craft Art publishes free-admission arrangements, but this does not establish every shop entrance policy. Confirm access with the retail operator if shopping is your only purpose, particularly at MMCA Seoul.
Can I visit a museum shop in the evening?
Museum Shop 1 at the National Museum of Korea and MMCA Seoul’s retail spaces publish late opening on Wednesday and Saturday. SeMoCA’s temporary extension has a different shop-specific schedule, with Friday closing at 21:00. Check the exact retail space and date rather than the museum’s general closing time.
Are English books and English-speaking staff guaranteed?
No blanket guarantee applies to these shops. MMCA’s Art Book Shop includes international art books, but the language of a particular edition must be checked. Save the Korean venue name and address, and ask the shop about any language assistance you need.
Do these museum shops provide tourist tax refunds?
Do not assume that museum retail is automatically tax-free. Ask the individual shop whether it supports tourist tax refunds and whether your transaction qualifies before paying. Confirm payment, exchange and delivery conditions with the seller rather than applying an online shop’s policy to an in-person purchase.
Plan a Shopping Stop Around Your Museum Visit
For activities around your chosen shopping destination, explore things to do in Seoul. Keep the museum branch, internal shop name and retail opening time together in your itinerary.
Choose Seoul museum shops by their setting and location: cultural-heritage retail in Yongsan, contemporary-art shopping on Samcheong-ro, or a craft-focused stop near Anguk. One well-placed visit can fit your day without turning separate museums into a rushed shopping circuit.
