Korea Travel Survival Guide: Best Navigation Apps & T-money Card

April 10, 2026|by TripKorea Team

Have you pinned all your hotels and must-visit restaurants on Google Maps for your upcoming trip to Korea? If so, there is a crucial fact you must know before you arrive: Google Maps' walking directions and driving navigation do not work properly in South Korea.

But don't panic! There is a reason why millions of locals navigate the complex streets perfectly every day. To ensure you never get lost, here is the ultimate guide to the essential official apps you must download, along with everything you need to know about Korea’s magical transit card: 'T-money'.

1. The Google Maps Betrayal: Why Doesn't It Work?

Due to South Korea’s national security and spatial data protection laws,
highly detailed map data cannot be exported to foreign servers (like Google's).

While you can still use Google Maps to see general public transit routes, the app cannot track
your real-time location for step-by-step walking or driving directions.
Relying solely on Google Maps to navigate narrow alleys is a guaranteed way to get lost.

2. Your 2 Local Saviors: Naver Map vs. KakaoMap

To replace Google Maps, you need to use the official local apps. We highly recommend downloading at least one of these before you arrive or using the airport Wi-Fi.

  • 🥇 Naver Map (Highly Recommended for Tourists) This is the #1 navigation app used in Korea. The biggest reason we recommend Naver Map to foreign travelers is its perfect multi-language support (English, Chinese, Japanese). When you change the language setting, transit routes, station names, and even restaurant reviews translate into English.

  • KakaoMap The biggest rival to Naver Map, KakaoMap boasts incredibly accurate routing and real-time bus arrival information. It also supports English, but for first-time visitors, Naver Map's interface and search functions tend to be slightly more user-friendly.

3. The Transit Masterkey: T-money Card Guide

Now that you have your navigation app ready, it is time to hop on a bus or subway. Instead of buying single-journey tickets every time, you must get a 'T-money' card—a rechargeable smart card that works on all public transit (subways, buses, and even taxis) across the country.

  • Where to buy it? You can easily purchase a T-money card at convenience stores (CU, GS25, 7-Eleven) inside Incheon Airport, at AREX (Airport Railroad) vending machines, or at any subway station nationwide. The card itself usually costs between 3,000 to 5,000 KRW.

  • ⚠️ Crucial Warning: CASH ONLY Reloads! This is the most common mistake foreigners make.
You cannot use credit cards or foreign travel cards to top up your T-money card.
Whether you use a ticket machine inside a subway station or ask a convenience store clerk to reload it, it strictly requires Korean Won (KRW) cash. Make sure to withdraw or exchange some cash at the airport specifically for your transit card.

  • 💡 Pro Tip: Get Your T-money Card in Advance! To skip the hassle of wandering around looking for a convenience store while carrying heavy luggage, we highly recommend getting your T-money card ready before you start exploring. You can easily purchase it online in advance.

  • Bonus Tip: T-money cards are not just for transit! You can use them to pay for items at convenience stores and even some franchise cafes, making it a great way to spend your leftover balance before leaving.
